What is a Router? What Does It Do?

Routers are devices that provide convenience in connecting to the internet and to expand the internet connection area. The router used in areas where the modem connection is not sufficient helps the devices with Wi-Fi feature to use the internet.

The router is the device that communicates between two networks and enables direct communication. The router is the device that analyzes, displays, and transfers data packets from one network to another network. The router is used for the smooth transmission of data between two stations and for determining the way in which the data will be delivered.

The processing capacity of the routers for the internet connection is wider. It not only directs the incoming data to a network, but also performs the process of viewing, viewing, and transferring data packets. Devices that determine how and to which address the incoming data packets will reach do not offer an internet connection. Routers must, therefore, be connected to the modem and accessed to the internet. It is connected to the modem with the Ethernet sockets on the router devices. Thus, other computers connected to the Routers also provide access to the Internet.

Router devices are wired or wireless. Nowadays, the wireless connection can be established with a Wi-Fi Router in most places. In this way, networks can be connected with the router. In general, users are preferred wireless router devices both to establish a connection between devices and networks, to expand the Wi-Fi area and to improve the signal quality.

What Does a Router Do?

The Wireless Router distributes the internet connection wirelessly to different devices. In this way, it frees the cables and establishes an internet connection or network connection to longer distances inexpensively.

Router Setup

The router provides internet access through a single modem within its coverage area. A different setup is required for each Router. It can be installed with the Wireless Router by following the steps in the user manual. After making the connections of the router properly, following a similar path like http://192.168.1.1, you can log in to the modem interface and make the necessary settings for the internet connection with the information given to the users through the service provider.

The difference of Router Device from Modem

The main difference between router and modem devices is that the router connects local networks but cannot provide internet access alone. The modem provides access to the internet. The router must be connected to the modem in order to connect to the internet. The router assigns a different IP to each connected device. While these devices provide access to the internet, they use the IP address of the assigned internet network. The purpose of modems is to provide access to the Internet. Although it is not produced to connect the devices at the same time, some models may have a router feature.
